Timber Floor Thickness

Solid wood floor is most commonly found in 15 to 20mm thickness.

The joists can be longer or shorter as required by space and size and are typically spaced at either 450mm or 600mm apart. Just like solid wood engineered wood flooring is available in various thicknesses ranging from 15 to 21 mm. An engineered wood floor which is being fitted over under floor heating is normally recommended to be a maximum of 15mm thick. Where the existing floor is structurally sound either overlay flooring generally 11 mm to 14 mm thick or structural flooring generally 19 mm to 21 mm thick can be laid.

Timber t g flooring may be laid over an existing t g floor or sheet floor plywood or particleboard. For joist spacing of more than 16 inches up to 19 2 inches on center the minimum thickness for both plywood and osb is 3 4 inch. The first is the thickness of the overall board and the second is the thickness of the solid wood lamella or top layer. Then use a wooden float to smooth the surface.

What is the level of traffic your floor will need to stand. Floor joists are made from 2 by 8 inch or 2 by 10 inch lumber or from engineered quiet beams which are made from a thin layer of chipboard on edge between two lumber caps forming an i shape. For joists spaced more than 19 2 inches on center the minimum thickness for plywood is 7 8 inch and for osb 1 inch. When choosing the thickness of engineered wood flooring there are two different considerations to be taken into account. 1 2 inch 12 7 mm 5 8 inch 15 88 mm. Other thicknesses and widths are also available though solid hardwood flooring is rarely more than about 4 inches wide.

Work in areas that are no bigger than 3 m x 3 m and use a straightedged length of timber or aluminium to scrape any extra mortar off the surface. Mix the mortar and spread it over the surface of the concrete so that it is 25 mm to 30 mm thick.
